Feet and Hands and a little French!

Hello my Nia Friends,  
Bonjour mes Amis de Nia,
 


In my classes we will be dancing to the French Album by Celine Dion - Oh mon mon!  This is actually a Nia routine created by Debbie Rosas at least 10 years ago (maybe more) called Destiny.  Our focus is on Feet and Hands, and the wonderful relationship between the two. Have you ever thought about this relationship?  And how much our feet have in common with our hands?  They both have 10 digits, each have heels, and a hinge joint that keep them flexible and pliable (ankle and wrist).  Our feet have 26 bones, our hands have 27.  Our feet keep us connected below to the earth...our hands that touch the earth.  Our hands connect us to energy space around us...our feet that touch the space.  Our hands when connected to our feet in movement give ease in our steps and stances, and help us remain vertical.  When we integrate the feet and hands in all our movement awareness, we integrate the upper and lower body.  Mon mot ceci est fantastique!  I hope you can join me...La joie du mouvement est la graine! 

My word this week is Trust or Confiance in French. Trust in myself, in my dance of life; and with my hands and feet, I trust my feet to take me throughout my day.  I trust my hands can perform and create.  And the trust goes unspoken and most of the time unaware.​  So I say THANK YOU to my hands and feet!!!

​Coming Sunday March 8, another Melt Hand & Foot Introduction Workshop from 2-3:30 pm The MELT Hand & Foot method uses a series of small balls to draw fluids into the tissues that surround every muscle, bone, joint, and organ in the body. Nia - Fitness for Your Brain!

Hello Friends!
What if you fitness program also conditioned your brain?  I'm in - And I have been IN for 20 years!  Though we may not think about our brain when we step into a fitness class, conditioning our brain is just as important (or maybe more!) as conditioning our heart, lungs, legs, abdominal muscles, etc.  According to Dr. Michael Merzenech, author of Soft-Wired: How the New Science of Brain Plasticity Can Change Your Life, to develop a healthy brain one should partake in activities that provide the following:
  1. They should teach you something new.
  2. They should be challenging.
  3. They should be progressive.
  4. They should engage your great brain processing systems.
  5. They should be novel or surprising.
  6. They should be rewarding.
Does this sound like Nia - YES!! In Nia, our brain is AutoMagically conditioned during the entire class.  In class we bring variety and newness each time through the 9 movement forms of Nia.  One moment you may be kicking and the next creating dramatic shapes with your body.  In Nia we invite you to challenge your workout by moving through your low, middle and high planes of movement and taking your moves to your personal "edge".  We move left and right, front and back, around the room, and look with our eyes to heighten our spatial awareness and direct our attention.  Nia sparks the left brain with patterns and sequences, and with gentle queues of "Let's do 2 more".  Nia feeds our right brain with imagery and dreams, and invites us to be the Martial Artist, the Dancer, the Yogi.  Nia allows us to make choices and decisions (which our brain loves to do) by inviting us to be in Natural Time and allowing pleasure to guide our movements.  We add the element of surprise and fun by saying "YES", "NO", "STOP", "GO", which also connects us to our emotions and to our 2nd brain - our "Gut".  At the end of class, we all step out feeling joyful, relaxed, motivated and inspired.  I call that rewarding - don't you? 
And when we the teachers invite you to move w/out thinking, we not only encourage you to move differently and break habits, think about this time as rest time for your brain.  OH and the music...the Nia brain-list goes on and on!  See you on the dance floor!

The Gift of Love - Yum!!

Hi My Friends!!

Our hearts have the power to give and receive love for ourselves, others and the Universe.  Our hearts have the power to transform any situation into peace, harmony, and joy through the giving and receiving of love.  

Our heart loves to dance and be open, and through this openness...a heart wide open...we are present to give and receive love to ourselves, others and the Universe.  We can open our hearts by simply undulating our spine and moving our ribcage.  Or by allowing our sounds to vibrate and open our heart.  Take a nice deep breath and then on the exhale sound  YUMMM!!!  Sense the vibration in your heart!!  This vibration is the voice of your heart!  "YUM" is actually
a Sanskrit mantra that opens your heart chakra – activating peace, harmony and love.


One of the ways we can sense the giving and receiving of love is through our hands.  Through touch our hands give and receive love and compassion through the simple act of a hug or a soft brush on a shoulder or cheek.  Take your hands and place them on your heart center and breath...close your eyes and smell the moment.  Receive and give love simultaneously, unconditionally.  Now open your eyes and sense the world around you...did it transform?   Our hands are an extension of our heart.  Did you know your left ring finger has a direct vessel to your heart?
It's heart week - love week.  "What if" everything you did, every decision you made was based on love?  Would the world be a better place?  Would you be happier?  YES!!!

Spend a fun-filled weekend exploring a new way of being and living in your body through Nia. Whether you are an avid Nia practitioner, a Nia belt or completely new to movement, this weekend is a special opportunity for fun, renewal, and an opportunity to explore and play!   Grounded in the 13 Nia White Belt principles, our exploration will be through cognitive and experiential practices (classes, exploratory movement), moving in body-centered and pleasurable ways.  There will be also be opportunities for reflection, relaxation, sharing, community, and time to enjoy the wonderful city of San Antonio, TX.A Sacred Athlete is a teacher and healer to everyBody, and makes choices from love and pleasure.  This is the path to transformation and self-mastery.  Take the path and start your journey!
